The trunk is its second asset: smooth, mottled and shedding to a polished pink-tan surface that looks best when the tree is limbed up. Flowers open pale pink to mauve through the wet season, when little else of that scale is in bloom.

Why the Australian Crepe Myrtle

Tropical Adaptation: Native to the far north, so it flowers well in humidity that mildews other crepe myrtles.
Polished Bark: Smooth mottled trunk that becomes a feature once the lower limbs are removed.
Summer Flowering: Crinkled pink to mauve panicles through the warm, wet months.
Manageable Scale: Grows to a genuine small tree rather than a large canopy species.
Non Invasive Roots: Safe to plant reasonably close to paving and paths.

Ideal Applications

Small Garden Shade Tree: Delivers dappled shade over a courtyard or seating area.
Tropical Street Planting: Suits northern verges and median beds where scale is limited.
Multi-Stem Feature: Grown with several trunks to show off the bark from ground level.
Poolside Tree: Fine leaf litter and controlled roots make it workable near pool surrounds.

Specimen & Installation

Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5m to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4m to 6m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer, ahead of the wet
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable but prefers deep, free-draining loam; avoid permanently wet ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers, then only during extended dry spells.
