Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Fir - Abies concolor
Of all the true firs, Abies concolor is the one that copes best with warm dry summers, which is why it succeeds in Australian cool climate gardens where the alpine firs sulk and die. It carries long, soft, blunt tipped needles in a distinctive pale blue grey, arranged in flat sprays along horizontal branches, and it builds a symmetrical conical spire that needs no shaping. Crushed needles smell faintly of citrus. It is a tree for the tablelands, the highlands and the southern states, not for humid coastal heat.
Why White Fir
Needle Character: Long, soft, blunt blue grey needles that are safe to brush past, unlike the sharp spruces.
Natural Symmetry: Forms an even conical spire with regular branch whorls without any pruning intervention.
Heat Tolerance: The most heat and drought tolerant of the true firs, which widens its usable range in Australia.
Frost Hardiness: Completely unbothered by hard frost and snow load in highland and tablelands gardens.
Measured Growth: Slow to moderate, so it stays in scale with a large garden for decades rather than years.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Lawn Specimen: A single tree in open grass where the full conical form is visible from base to tip.
Highland Garden Feature: Suited to the tablelands, the Adelaide Hills, the Victorian highlands and Tasmania.
Living Christmas Tree: The classic choice for a large pot for several years before planting out.
Formal Entry Pair: Two matched trees flanking a rural driveway, spaced well apart for the mature width.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedge plant. In a grove or shelter row, 4 to 5m apart.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m.
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring while conditions are cool and moist.
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining, slightly acidic soil. It will fail in heavy wet clay and struggles in humid coastal or subtropical districts regardless of soil.
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first two summers and more often during heatwaves, since young firs are far less drought tolerant than mature ones. Mulch deeply to keep the root zone cool, shelter it from hot dry wind, and never cut or damage the central leader because the tree will not rebuild a clean spire.
