Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Nordmann Fir - Abies nordmanniana
Abies nordmanniana is the fir of the Caucasus mountains, and it makes a broad, formally conical tree with tiers of horizontal branches clothed in soft, densely set needles that are glossy dark green above and marked with two silver bands beneath. The needles are blunt rather than sharp, so it is comfortable to handle, and they hold on cut branches far longer than most conifers. In Australia it is strictly a cool-climate tree, at home in Tasmania, the Victorian ranges, the Adelaide Hills and the New South Wales tablelands, and unhappy anywhere hot and dry.
Why Nordmann Fir
Formal conical shape: Grows naturally into an even, symmetrical cone with no shaping required.
Soft blunt needles: Unlike spruces, the needles are not prickly, which suits gardens where children play.
Two-tone foliage: Dark glossy upper surfaces over silvery-banded undersides give depth to the canopy.
Needle retention: Holds its needles exceptionally well, the reason it is the premium Christmas tree species in Europe.
Cold hardiness: Handles hard frost and snow without damage in high country gardens.
Ideal Applications
Cool-climate lawn specimen: A single tree with space to develop its full symmetrical cone.
Living Christmas tree: Grown in a large pot for several years before being planted permanently.
Shelter belt planting: Used in rows on cold rural blocks to break wind at scale.
Highland estate landscaping: Suits large cool-district gardens where a mature conifer silhouette is wanted.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a shelter belt row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m to allow the crown full development
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring, into moist cool soil
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, slightly acid, well-drained loam; dislikes alkaline soil, compaction and prolonged dryness
Establishment Care: Water thoroughly through the first three summers, as firs have little tolerance for dry root zones and decline quickly if stressed. Mulch widely with bark or leaf litter to keep the soil cool, and site the tree out of hot dry wind and away from reflected heat off paving or walls.
