Copper Tips Bower Wattle - Acacia cognata ‘Copper Tips’
The bower wattles are grown for foliage rather than flower, and Acacia cognata carries the finest of them: long, narrow, weeping phyllodes that hang in soft curtains and move in the lightest wind. 'Copper Tips' adds a warm coppery bronze flush on every burst of new growth, so the plant shifts colour through the growing season rather than sitting static green. It gives the movement and softness of an ornamental grass at shrub scale, and it holds that texture all year.
Why Copper Tips Bower Wattle
Copper new growth: Each flush emerges bronze-copper over the fine green foliage, then fades to green as it hardens.
Weeping texture: Fine pendulous phyllodes create constant movement, an effect very few evergreen shrubs achieve.
Compact habit: Stays a rounded mounding shrub rather than the small tree the species can become.
Quick establishment: Puts on size fast in its first two seasons, filling a bed sooner than most natives.
Soft form: The rounded shape breaks up hard architectural lines without needing to be clipped.
Ideal Applications
Modern native borders: Softens contemporary planting schemes built on grasses, dianella and lomandra.
Mass planting: Repeated in groups it reads as a flowing green wave along a driveway or path.
Slope and embankment cover: The spreading habit and fast growth help stabilise gentle batters.
Large pots and planters: The weeping foliage spills over container rims to good effect.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m for a continuous soft band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m as individual mounds
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in temperate districts
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining soil is essential; this group is highly sensitive to wet feet and root rot on heavy clay
Establishment Care: Water moderately through the first summer and then back right off, since established plants resent regular irrigation. Mulch with coarse bark, avoid high-phosphorus fertilisers, and tip prune lightly after each growth flush to keep the shrub dense and prevent it opening out at the base.
