Black Wattle - Acacia mearnsii
Black wattle is the workhorse of south eastern Australian revegetation, a fast, nitrogen fixing pioneer that puts a canopy over bare ground faster than almost anything else that belongs there. Acacia mearnsii carries dark, finely divided bipinnate foliage rather than the flat phyllodes of most cultivated wattles, and in late spring it covers itself in pale cream to lemon ball flowers with a soft honey scent. It is chosen for shelter, soil repair and habitat rather than for longevity, since it lives fast and typically bows out at fifteen to thirty years.
Why Black Wattle
Speed: Puts on rapid height in its first few years, closing a gap in a shelterbelt long before slower eucalypts catch up.
Soil Building: Fixes nitrogen through root nodules and drops fine leaf litter, improving degraded and worked out ground.
Fine Texture: The ferny, dark green bipinnate foliage reads as soft and feathery against coarser native canopy species.
Habitat: Supports sugar gliders, seed eating birds and a wide range of insects, and is a recognised food tree in its natural range.
Site Tolerance: Grows on poor, gravelly and eroded soils, handles frost, wind and dry summers once its roots are down.
Ideal Applications
Shelterbelt and Windbreak: Planted through a farm windbreak as the fast nurse species that protects slower growing trees.
Revegetation and Erosion Control: Used on cleared slopes and creek lines where quick canopy cover and root binding are needed.
Rural Screening: A dense, quick answer to a bare boundary on an acreage block.
Habitat Corridors: Included in indigenous plantings across Victoria, Tasmania and southern New South Wales to link remnant bushland.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early winter in temperate zones so roots establish before summer
Soil & Drainage: Well drained soils of almost any fertility, from gravel and shale to loam, though it dislikes permanently waterlogged ground and highly alkaline soils
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer only, since wattles resent constant moisture and root rot easily in over watered soil. Mulch lightly, stake only in exposed sites, and avoid rich fertiliser as it produces soft growth that snaps in wind.
