Cape Schanck Coast Wirilda - Acacia uncifolia ‘Cape Schanck’
Coast Wirilda is the wattle that survives where the wind comes straight off Bass Strait. Acacia uncifolia grows as a dense, rounded shrub or low branching small tree with thick blue green phyllodes tipped by a distinctive little hook, and it takes salt laden wind and pure coastal sand without flinching. This Cape Schanck form is raised from local seed, which matters on exposed Peninsula sites where inland provenances of similar wattles routinely fail in their second winter.
Why Coast Wirilda
Salt Wind Hardiness: It holds foliage and form in front line coastal positions where most wattles burn off on the seaward side.
Autumn Flowering: Bright yellow globular heads appear from late summer into autumn, a useful nectar source outside the winter wattle season.
Hooked Phyllodes: Thick, slightly glaucous phyllodes with a curved point give a firmer, more sculptural texture than the softer inland wirildas.
Sand Tolerance: It roots readily in deep coastal sand and stabilises dune backslopes and blowouts.
Dense Low Habit: Branching starts close to the ground, so it screens at eye level rather than only overhead.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Windbreak: Planted in a staggered double row it cuts the salt wind reaching a beach house garden and lets softer plants survive behind it.
Dune Revegetation: A standard species in Victorian and South Australian coastal restoration work on secondary dunes.
Informal Boundary Screen: Its naturally bushy habit fills a fence line without clipping.
Bird Habitat: The dense prickly interior gives small bush birds safe nesting and refuge cover close to the coast.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn is ideal on the coast, giving a full wet season of root growth before summer wind.
Soil & Drainage: Prefers free draining sands and sandy loams, including calcareous coastal sands. It tolerates brief winter wetness but not sustained waterlogging, and needs no phosphorus.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then taper off completely. Mulch and, on very exposed sites, use a temporary hessian windbreak for the first twelve months so the young plant establishes a symmetrical crown rather than being pushed one sided.
