Kelly’s Gold Box Elder - Acer negundo ‘Kelly’s Gold’
Kelly's Gold is the golden box elder, and it holds colour better than most yellow-leaved trees: the pinnate leaves emerge lime-gold in spring and stay genuinely bright through summer instead of bleaching to a tired cream. Acer negundo is the toughest of the maples, comfortable in wet ground, heavy clay and cold that would check a Japanese maple, so this cultivar delivers a strong colour statement without needing the pampered site that gold-leaved trees usually demand.
Why Kelly’s Gold
Season Long Gold: Foliage stays yellow-gold from spring flush through to autumn rather than fading by Christmas.
Wet Soil Tolerance: Unusually happy in damp and periodically waterlogged ground, which no other ornamental maple manages.
Cold Hardiness: Handles severe frost and cold wet winters in the tablelands and alpine fringe districts.
Fast Growth: Makes real height in a few seasons, so the colour effect is not a decade away.
Open Canopy: Light, airy branching means underplanting still gets enough light to perform.
Siting note: Box elders are known to self seed, so it is worth siting this tree away from creek lines.
Ideal Applications
Colour Contrast: Placed against dark evergreens or a dark fence the gold foliage reads from right across a garden.
Damp Corners: Solves the poorly drained low spot where most deciduous trees fail.
Fast Acreage Screening: Quick summer screening on rural blocks where speed matters more than longevity.
Coppiced Shrub: Cut back hard each winter it throws up vigorous shoots with larger, brighter leaves.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Winter to early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Highly adaptable, including heavy and seasonally wet soils. The gold foliage scorches in hot dry wind, so give afternoon shelter in inland districts.
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers and mulch widely to keep the shallow roots cool. Box elder sets viable winged seed and can self sow in damp ground, so pull seedlings as you see them and do not plant it near creeks, rivers or bushland.
