Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Maple - Acer rubrum
Autumn colour is the whole argument for Acer rubrum, and in the cool temperate parts of Australia it delivers scarlet and orange more reliably than most exotic shade trees. It is also the first tree in the garden to signal spring, opening small red flower clusters on bare wood weeks before any leaves appear. Where a Japanese maple is too small and a plane tree too coarse, red maple sits in the middle: a clean, upright shade tree at a domestic scale.
Why Red Maple
Autumn Display: Foliage turns scarlet, crimson and orange through April and May in districts with genuine cold nights.
Early Flowers: Dense clusters of small red flowers appear on bare branches in late winter, well ahead of leaf break.
Clean Habit: Forms an upright oval to rounded crown with a straight central leader, suiting formal driveways and lawn settings.
Moist Site Tolerance: Unlike many deciduous trees, it grows naturally in low lying wet ground and handles a damp garden corner.
Manageable Scale: In Australian conditions it settles well short of its North American dimensions, staying in proportion with suburban blocks.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: A single tree set in turf where the autumn colour carries the whole garden for a month.
Driveway Avenue: Paired rows give a strong seasonal rhythm along a long entry in cool climate properties.
Deciduous Summer Shade: Planted north or west of a house to shade in summer and let winter sun through once bare.
Street and Nature Strip: Best kept well clear of paving, kerbs and services, as the surface roots are vigorous and can lift hard surfaces.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not suited to hedging, group plantings at 5 to 6m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Late autumn through winter while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture retentive, slightly acidic soil that drains freely, and it will yellow badly on limestone or strongly alkaline soils
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist through the first two summers, watering deeply rather than frequently, as red maple is intolerant of drying out while young. Mulch to 100mm across the full planting circle and formative prune in late winter to maintain a single leader.
