Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Silver Maple - Acer saccharinum
One of the fastest growing deciduous shade trees available, Acer saccharinum carries deeply cut leaves that are green above and distinctly silver-white beneath, flashing pale as the wind turns them. It is a large tree for large spaces: on acreage, in parkland or across a wide rural block it delivers canopy within a decade, but its brittle wood and vigorous surface roots make it a poor choice near buildings, paving or services.
Why Silver Maple
Growth speed: Few deciduous trees establish canopy as quickly, which is why it has long been used for rapid shade.
Two-tone foliage: The silver undersides create a shimmering effect through the whole canopy in any breeze.
Winter light: Bare through winter, so it shades a house in summer and lets sun through when it is wanted.
Cold tolerance: Fully hardy through frost and snow, suiting cool temperate and highland Australian districts.
Soil adaptability: It accepts damp, heavy and periodically wet soil that defeats many other large deciduous trees.
Ideal Applications
Acreage and paddock shade: Its best use, with 15m or more of clear space in every direction.
Parkland and open reserve: A traditional fast park tree where root spread and limb drop can be managed.
Creek flat and damp ground: Tolerates seasonally wet soil along watercourses and low-lying paddocks.
Windbreak backdrop: Planted well behind the house line to filter cold wind on rural properties.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 8 to 10m centres for a shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12 to 15m, and at least 12m from any building, drain or paved surface
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant is ideal, or early spring before bud burst
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from moist loam to heavy clay, and tolerant of ground that is wet for part of the year. It performs poorly on shallow dry soil over rock.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first two summers to encourage roots downward rather than along the surface. Mulch a wide circle rather than a narrow ring, stake only while the tree settles, and formative prune early to remove narrow forks, since mature silver maples shed limbs in storms.
