Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Siebold Maple - Acer sieboldianum
Acer sieboldianum is a Japanese woodland maple with rounded, softly hairy leaves cut into nine or eleven shallow lobes, and it is distinguished from the very similar full moon maple by its creamy yellow spring flowers rather than red ones. It builds slowly into a broad, multi-stemmed small tree with a layered canopy, and its autumn colour runs through gold and orange to deep crimson. Where the palmate Japanese maples can look fine and fussy, this one has a softer, more substantial leaf and a calmer presence.
Why Siebold Maple
Rounded lobed leaves: Nine to eleven shallow lobes on a broad circular leaf give a fuller, softer canopy texture.
Creamy spring flowers: Pale yellow flower clusters hang beneath the emerging foliage, unusual among the ornamental maples.
Strong autumn colour: Turns gold to orange and often deep crimson in cool districts.
Multi-stemmed frame: Naturally branches low into a layered, vase-shaped tree with good winter structure.
Shade tolerance: A genuine woodland species that flowers and colours well in filtered light.
Ideal Applications
Woodland garden canopy: The natural mid-storey tree above hellebores, ferns and shade perennials.
Cool-climate lawn specimen: A single tree in turf where the layered branching can be read.
Sheltered courtyards: The broad low canopy suits an enclosed space in a cool district.
Autumn colour groupings: Planted with other maples and deciduous shrubs for a staged autumn display.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in an informal woodland grouping
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or early spring before bud break
Soil & Drainage: Moist, humus-rich, slightly acid loam with free drainage; dislikes lime and compaction
Establishment Care: Water deeply and regularly through the first three summers, keeping the soil evenly moist rather than swinging between wet and dry. Mulch widely with leaf litter or fine bark to hold the root zone cool, and give the tree shelter from hot afternoon sun and drying wind.
