Taggerty Sunset Maple - Acer ‘Taggerty Sunset’
‘Taggerty Sunset’ is a named maple selection grown in Australia for consistent, warm-toned autumn colour on an upright, well-shaped deciduous frame. Like other ornamental Acer selections, its value is seasonal architecture: bare structure in winter, fresh green in spring, dense shade in summer, then a concentrated burst of orange to red before leaf fall. It suits gardeners in cooler temperate districts who want the autumn display of a maple without the fragility of the smaller Japanese types.
Why Taggerty Sunset Maple
Autumn Display: Selected for warm sunset tones of orange and red rather than the variable colouring of seedling maples.
Upright Frame: Develops a clean central leader and a balanced crown, making it a reliable canopy tree in a lawn or verge.
Seasonal Light Control: Full summer shade and a bare winter canopy suit north-facing living areas that need sun in the cold months.
Cold Hardy: Comfortable with frost across Victoria, Tasmania, the tablelands and the Adelaide Hills.
Consistent Form: Being a named clone, trees in an avenue match each other in habit and colour timing.
Ideal Applications
Lawn Specimen: A single tree gives shape and a clear autumn moment in a cool-climate garden.
Avenue Planting: Matched trees along a driveway colour together, which seedling-grown maples do not.
Deciduous Shade for Living Areas: Placed to the north or west of a house it shades summer glass and admits winter sun.
Parkland and Estate Planting: Suits larger cool-climate landscapes where autumn colour is planned as a set piece.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a loose deciduous row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Autumn through winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moisture-retentive, well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral; maples resent shallow dry soils and hot dry wind
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first three summers, as maples show heat stress as scorched leaf margins long before they show wilting. Keep 100mm of mulch over a wide grass-free ring and avoid planting in a hot reflective courtyard, where the autumn colour will be poorer and leaf burn more likely.
