Dwarf Hedgemaker Lilly Pilly - Acmena hemilampra ‘Dwarf Hedgemaker’
Broad leaved lilly pilly is naturally a rainforest tree, and this is the compact selection that makes it usable as a hedge. Acmena hemilampra ‘Dwarf Hedgemaker’ carries the same wide, thick, high gloss leaves and coppery new growth as the species on a plant that settles at two to three metres, so it fills the awkward gap between a low border shrub and a full screening tree. Like the other Acmena, it is not troubled by the psyllid that pimples the leaves of many Syzygium hedges.
Why Dwarf Hedgemaker
Psyllid Resistance: Acmena foliage is not disfigured by the lilly pilly psyllid, so the hedge stays clean without spraying.
Broad Glossy Leaf: Wider leaves than most hedging lilly pillies give the clipped face a bolder, more tropical texture.
New Growth Colour: Flushes of copper and bronze appear several times a year, especially after a trim.
Natural Compactness: Holds a dense low branching habit with minimal pruning, unlike dwarf forms that thin out at the base.
Native Credentials: An Australian rainforest species, with flowers that feed native bees and fruit taken by birds.
Ideal Applications
Formal Hedging: Clipped to a 1.5 to 2.5m privacy hedge along a fence or path.
Screening Under Eaves: Its limited height suits positions where a full sized lilly pilly would reach the gutters.
Feature Shrub Mass: Planted in blocks for glossy evergreen structure in a native or subtropical garden.
Large Containers: Grown in planters as a movable green wall on terraces and balconies.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m for a tight formal hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m as individual shrubs
Best Planting Season: Spring through autumn in warm zones, spring in cooler districts
Soil & Drainage: Moisture retentive, well drained soil enriched with compost. Tolerates clay if drainage is improved, but dislikes drying out completely
Establishment Care: Water two to three times weekly through the first summer, since dry patches along a hedge line show up permanently as gaps. Mulch the entire run to 75mm, feed with a slow release native fertiliser in spring and again in late summer, and start light tip pruning in the first season to build density from the ground rather than allowing bare legs to form.
