Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Firescreen Lilly Pilly - Acmena smithii ‘Firescreen’
Firescreen is grown for the flush. Each new growth cycle on this Acmena smithii selection comes away bright red before hardening to glossy dark green, so a clipped hedge cycles through colour several times a year instead of sitting static. It is also naturally upright and narrow for a lilly pilly, which means a tall screen without surrendering two metres of garden depth, and it carries the psyllid resistance that makes the acmenas so much less trouble than the syzygiums.
Why Firescreen
Red New Growth: Every flush opens vivid red, and each trim triggers another one, so colour is on demand.
Narrow Upright Habit: Holds height in a two to three metre width, unlike the broad spreading lilly pillies.
Psyllid Resistance: Foliage stays smooth and unblemished where susceptible varieties pit and distort.
Quick To Screening Height: Reaches first floor privacy height in a few seasons under reasonable conditions.
Clips At Any Age: Reshoots dependably from old wood, so an overgrown hedge can be renovated rather than replaced.
Ideal Applications
Tall Narrow Boundary Screen: The standard answer for privacy in a side setback with limited bed depth.
Formal Clipped Hedge: Takes a flat face and square corners cleanly with routine trimming.
Two Storey Privacy: Blocks overlooking upper windows where a fence cannot legally go high enough.
Pleached Or Column Form: Trains readily into pleached panels and clipped columns for architectural planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring or autumn. Avoid planting into cold wet soil in frost prone gardens
Soil & Drainage: Moist, free draining soil with generous organic matter. Clay that drains is fine, and feeding in spring and autumn keeps the red flushes coming.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, then weekly through the second. Trim lightly three or four times through the warm months rather than once hard, which both builds density at the base and produces a fresh red flush each time.
