Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Hot Flush Lilly Pilly (Topiary) - Acmena smithii var. minor ‘Hot Flush’
Clipped as a topiary, ‘Hot Flush’ works harder than most shaped evergreens because every cut triggers a new burst of bright red growth, so the plant colours up precisely when you have just tidied it. Acmena smithii var. minor is the small leaved dwarf form of the native lilly pilly, and this selection has the added advantage of strong resistance to psyllid, the insect that disfigures many Syzygium hedges with pimpled leaves. Dense, small leaved and fast to recover, it holds a crisp shaped outline better than almost any other Australian native.
Why Hot Flush Topiary
Red New Growth: Fresh shoots emerge glossy red and bronze before hardening to deep green, giving colour several times a year.
Psyllid Resistance: Foliage stays clean and unblistered where susceptible lilly pillies pucker and brown.
Small Dense Leaf: Fine leaves and tight internodes take a sharp clipped edge on a ball, cone or cloud form.
Rapid Recovery: It reshoots quickly after shearing, so a shape holds with two or three cuts a year.
Australian Native: A local rainforest species doing formal work usually given to box, bay or privet.
Ideal Applications
Matched entry pairs: Two shaped specimens at a doorway or gate give instant formality.
Pot topiary: It holds shape well in a large container on a terrace or balcony with regular water.
Formal courtyard planting: Repeated shapes in a gravel or paved courtyard give structure without flower maintenance.
Rhythm along a path: Evenly spaced clipped forms lead the eye along a walkway or pool surround.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1m to 1.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m to 2.5m centres
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn
Soil & Drainage: Moist, free draining soil enriched with organic matter. It tolerates most soil types but not extended dryness, which causes leaf drop and loss of density inside the shape.
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer to build the dense interior growth a topiary depends on. Mulch to 75mm, feed with a controlled release native fertiliser in spring, and make the first light trim only once new growth has hardened after planting.
