Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Afrocarpus usambarensis
An East African yellowwood from the mountain forests of Tanzania, Afrocarpus usambarensis is a conifer that does not look like one: fine linear leaves arranged along the shoots give it the appearance of a dense broadleaf evergreen. In its native forest it reaches great height over centuries, but in Australian gardens it behaves as a manageable, slow to moderate, well mannered tree. Its real appeal to designers is a non-invasive root system, which makes it a sane alternative to figs near paving and services.
Why the Yellowwood
Root behaviour: Unlike figs, its roots are not aggressive, so it can be used closer to paving, pools and structures.
Foliage texture: Fine soft linear leaves give a dense but not heavy canopy that clips cleanly.
Hedging aptitude: It responds well to shearing and is well suited to formal hedges and pleached screens.
Longevity: Yellowwoods are extremely long lived trees that hold form and health for generations.
Growth expectation: It reaches forest scale only over a very long time, so garden height is typically 8 to 15m across a lifetime.
Ideal Applications
Formal evergreen hedge: A clipped row gives a dark fine textured wall with no root risk.
Screening near structures: Its manners suit boundaries close to drives, paving and services.
Avenue planting: On a larger property it makes a stately even lined avenue.
Feature evergreen: A single specimen gives year round mass to a mixed garden.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 8m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Deep well drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral, moderate fertility, no waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice weekly through the first two summers to build a strong root system before growth accelerates. Mulch a wide circle clear of the trunk, feed in spring, and begin light formative trimming early if a hedge or pleached form is the goal.
