Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Blue Century Plant - Agave americana
Few plants hold architectural weight the way a mature Agave americana does. The rosette of thick, grey-blue leaves arches out in a rigid spiral that reads as sculpture rather than planting, and it does so on rainfall alone once established. Designers reach for it where a hardy, drought-proof focal point is needed in a courtyard, a gravel bed or a dry coastal garden that will never be irrigated.
Why Blue Century Plant
Colour: The powdery blue-grey blade holds its tone through summer heat and does not scorch or fade the way soft-leaved plants do.
Structure: Leaves are held in a symmetrical rosette that gives instant geometry to loose or naturalistic planting.
Drought hardiness: Once rooted it survives long dry spells without supplementary water, making it suited to unirrigated verges and hot courtyards.
Coastal tolerance: Salt-laden wind and sandy soils suit it, so it performs on exposed foreshore sites.
Longevity: A single plant holds its form for a decade or more, and offsets around the base replace it in time.
Siting note: This species has naturalised in parts of southern Australia, so avoid planting adjacent to bushland reserves and remove pups as they appear.
Ideal Applications
Dry gravel and rockery gardens: Planted through crushed rock or scoria it anchors the composition and needs no seasonal maintenance.
Coastal landscapes: Handles wind, salt and free-draining sand where most feature plants fail.
Large containers: Grown in a wide, heavy pot it makes a strong entry statement and stays in scale for years.
Security planting: The terminal spine and toothed margins deter access along boundaries and beneath windows.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a continuous barrier row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m so the rosette can spread fully
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn, when soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sand, gravel or loam. Wet, heavy clay in winter is the one condition it will not tolerate; mound or raise the bed if drainage is doubtful.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a fortnight through the first warm season, then taper off almost entirely. Use a coarse gravel or pebble mulch rather than organic mulch, and keep it clear of the crown to avoid rot.
