Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Foxtail Agave - Agave attenuata
Unlike almost every other agave, this one has no teeth and no terminal spike, which is why it appears in courtyards, along paths and beside pools where a spined succulent would be a liability. Agave attenuata forms a soft grey-green rosette on a short thickening stem, offsets steadily into a colony, and eventually throws the long arching flower spike that gives it the foxtail name. It is the succulent of choice for coastal Australian gardens because it takes salt wind and reflected heat without losing form.
Why Foxtail Agave
Spineless Leaves: No marginal teeth and no terminal spine, so it is safe beside paths, pools and play areas.
Architectural Rosette: A clean geometric form that holds its shape year round with almost no intervention.
Coastal Hardiness: Handles salt-laden wind and sandy soil in exposed beachfront positions.
Colony Habit: Offsets from the base to build a drift of overlapping rosettes over a few years.
Very Low Water Demand: Survives on rainfall alone in most temperate coastal gardens once established.
Ideal Applications
Coastal Mass Planting: Drifts of rosettes across a slope or dune-facing bed handle wind and salt with no irrigation.
Feature Container: A single rosette in a large pot works as a sculptural object at an entry or on a terrace.
Poolside Bed: Soft leaves, low litter and no spines make it one of the safer succulents around water.
Dry Garden Groundwork: Combined with gravel mulch and grasses in a low-water Mediterranean-style bed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn, in warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is non-negotiable; sandy or gravelly soils and raised beds suit it, and heavy wet clay will rot the crown
Establishment Care: Water lightly every ten to fourteen days for the first two months only, then let rainfall do the work. Use a gravel or pebble mulch rather than bark to keep the base dry, and protect from frost, which scars the leaves permanently.
Plant Details

Width: 1.5 to 2m per rosette, spreading further as it offsets

Foliage: Evergreen
Light: Full sun on the coast; filtered afternoon sun is better in hot dry inland gardens
Native to: Central Mexico
