Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Agave pygmaea ‘Dragon Toes’
A low, wide-leaved agave selected for the heavy dark teeth that run the length of each leaf margin and give the plant its name. Agave pygmaea ‘Dragon Toes’ holds a tight ground-hugging rosette rather than the tall vase shape of the larger landscape agaves, so it reads as a piece of carved stone at ankle height instead of a barrier. Collectors choose it over the common garden agaves because the tooth colour and the bud imprinting on each new leaf stay sharp in a container at eye level.
Why Dragon Toes
Tooth Detail: The dark reddish-brown marginal teeth are unusually large for a rosette of this size and are the whole reason the plant is grown.
Compact Scale: It stays under half a metre tall, which makes it usable where a larger agave would eventually crowd a path or seat.
Heat Tolerance: It handles reflected heat off paving, rendered walls and gravel without scorching.
Low Water Demand: Once rooted in it survives on rainfall through most of southern Australia.
Slow and Predictable: It will not outgrow the position you plant it in, which matters in a courtyard or a pot.
Ideal Applications
Container Specimen: A single rosette in a wide bowl or urn shows the leaf shape better than any planting in the ground.
Gravel and Dry Gardens: Sits well among crushed rock, boulders and other Mexican succulents where irrigation is minimal.
Coastal Courtyards: Tolerates salt-laden wind and sandy soil in sheltered coastal positions.
Raised Bed Edges: Planted at the front of a raised bed the rosette is lifted to viewing height and the drainage is naturally sharper.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. For massed drifts allow 0.6 to 0.8m between rosettes.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m for repeated pot or bed features.
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn, while soil is warm and drying quickly.
Soil & Drainage: Sandy or gritty free-draining soil. Cold wet winter soil is the main cause of loss, so mound or raise the planting position on heavy clay.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a fortnight through the first warm season and then only in extended dry spells. Use a coarse gravel or pebble mulch rather than organic mulch, and keep it clear of the base of the leaves.
