Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Queen Victoria Agave - Agave victoriae-reginae
This is the most precisely drawn of all the agaves: a tight geometric dome of short, stiff, dark green leaves, each one finished with fine white lines where the leaf pressed against its neighbours in the bud. Agave victoriae-reginae grows slowly into a near perfect sphere and holds that form for decades, which is why it is treated as a living sculpture rather than a plant in a bed. It asks for almost nothing beyond sun and sharp drainage.
Why Queen Victoria Agave
Geometric Precision: The rosette is symmetrical to an unusual degree, with white pencil lines tracing every leaf.
Compact Size: Unlike most agaves it stays small, so it is safe near paths and seating.
Extreme Drought Tolerance: A Chihuahuan Desert plant that survives on rainfall alone in most southern Australian gardens.
Cold and Heat Range: Handles both hot dry summers and light to moderate frost, provided the soil stays dry in winter.
Decades of Form: Very slow growing and long lived, holding its shape without pruning or replacement.
Ideal Applications
Feature Pot: A single rosette in a shallow bowl or plinth pot works as a sculptural object at an entry.
Gravel and Rockery Gardens: Sits naturally among crushed rock, boulders and other succulents.
Repeated Modern Planting: Grouped in threes or fives along a rendered wall or podium bed for rhythm.
Low Water Verge and Median: Survives reflected heat and neglect in hot exposed positions.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. In a massed gravel bed allow 0.6 to 0.9m.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m as isolated accents
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn, into warm dry soil
Soil & Drainage: Very sharp drainage is essential. Gritty sandy soil, raised beds or a free draining cactus mix; slightly alkaline ground suits it well.
Establishment Care: Water lightly every couple of weeks for the first season only, then leave it to natural rainfall in most temperate districts. Use a gravel or coarse sand mulch rather than organic mulch, keeping the crown dry, because rot at the base is the only thing that reliably kills this plant.
