Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coyure Palm - Aiphanes horrida
Very few palms in Australian cultivation look armoured, and that is exactly the point of this one. Aiphanes horrida carries a slender trunk clad in rings of long black spines, topped by a crown of pinnate fronds whose leaflets are cut off square and jagged at the tips, as though torn rather than tapered. It is a South American rainforest palm for tropical and warm subtropical collectors who want a specimen nobody else in the street has, and it must be sited with its spines in mind.
Why the Coyure Palm
Armoured Trunk: Dense black spines band the trunk and leaf bases, creating a texture unlike any other palm grown here.
Ragged Leaflets: The wedge-shaped, chewed-looking leaflet tips give the crown a distinctly prehistoric outline.
Manageable Scale: It stays a mid-sized palm in cultivation rather than becoming a canopy tree, so it fits an enclosed garden.
Fruit Display: Mature palms hang bright red-orange fruit clusters below the crown.
Handling Warning: The spines are sharp and can cause painful puncture wounds, so it belongs away from paths, play areas and pool surrounds.
Ideal Applications
Collector Plantings: A conversation specimen for a botanically minded tropical garden.
Viewed Courtyard Feature: Set behind a low planted band so it is admired from a distance rather than brushed against.
Rainforest Layering: Slots into the mid-storey beneath taller canopy palms and rainforest trees.
Boundary Deterrent: Along a fence line the spined trunk doubles as a genuine physical barrier.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m in a grouped planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3.5 to 4.5m
Best Planting Season: Warm months, spring through to early autumn, while soil temperatures are high
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moisture retentive but free draining soil with high organic content; it will not tolerate waterlogging or drying out completely
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two years, watering two or three times weekly through summer. Mulch heavily with leaf litter or composted bark, provide filtered light and wind protection while young, and note that it is frost tender at any age.
