Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Alba Magnifica Azalea - Azalea indica ‘Alba Magnifica’
White is the colour that still shows in shade, and this tall single Azalea indica carries a great deal of it: from late winter it covers a full, rounded evergreen frame in large single blooms. ‘Alba Magnifica’ belongs to the vigorous, hardier indica group, so it grows into a proper garden shrub, not a compact pot plant. Its place is the cool side of a house or a bed under established trees.
Why Alba Magnifica Azalea
Flower clusters: Blooms are carried in trusses of two or three at every branch tip, so the whole outline turns white at peak.
Tall indica vigour: It belongs to the strongest growing azalea group, long lived and more forgiving of sun and soil than the compact hybrids.
Brightness in shade: White reads clearly in dim beds and at dusk, where reds and purples turn dark against the leaves.
Furnished evergreen frame: Mid to deep green leaves keep the shrub dense and leafy through the rest of the year.
Toxic if eaten: Leaves, flowers and nectar contain grayanotoxins that poison dogs, cats, people and grazing animals, so keep clippings out of paddocks and away from pets that chew.
Ideal Applications
East facing beds: Morning sun and afternoon shade along the east side of a house give it the light it flowers best in.
Under a high canopy: The dappled light below tall trees suits it, provided their roots are not left to take all the water.
Unclipped garden divider: A row left to grow loose makes a white partition between two parts of the garden each spring.
White garden schemes: It sits naturally with gardenias, camellias and silver foliage in a restrained, single colour planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Mid autumn is best, with early spring the second choice
Soil & Drainage: Acid loam full of leaf mould, about pH 5 to 6; on heavy clay it goes into a raised bed, because the fine surface roots rot in waterlogged ground
Establishment Care: Plant with the top of the root ball level with the surrounding soil, mulch with pine bark or leaf litter, and keep the ground evenly moist until the shrub has come through two summers. Shake spent flowers off and water at the base in the morning, which limits petal blight in humid springs. Any shaping is done as the last flowers drop, since the buds for the following year form on the summer growth.
