Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Forest She-oak - Allocasuarina torulosa
Forest she-oak has the finest, most weeping foliage of the casuarina group, hanging in soft rusty-green curtains from an upright, fairly narrow crown. What most people notice first is the winter colour: the male trees flush a warm copper-rust across the whole canopy before flowering. Allocasuarina torulosa also carries a distinctive corky, deeply fissured bark, and as a species of dry eucalypt forest along the east coast it copes with poor, shallow, acidic soils that would starve most ornamental trees.
Why Forest She-oak
Weeping Texture: Fine drooping branchlets give a soft, almost pine-like curtain that moves and sighs in wind.
Winter Colour Flush: Male trees turn a warm rust to copper tone across the canopy in the cooler months.
Corky Bark: Thick, deeply furrowed, corky bark gives strong trunk character even on relatively young trees.
Poor Soil Performance: Fixes nitrogen through root associations and thrives on shallow, infertile, acidic ground.
Wildlife Support: Woody cones are a food source for black cockatoos, and the litter layer suppresses weeds beneath.
Ideal Applications
Windbreak and Shelterbelt: Rows of she-oak filter wind effectively while tolerating exposure and poor soil.
Erosion Control: Useful on batters, gully edges and degraded ground where soil needs binding.
Native Grove: Planted in a stand it creates the whispering, needle-carpeted understorey typical of she-oak forest.
Informal Avenue: The narrow upright habit suits repeated planting along a rural drive.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring on the east coast
Soil & Drainage: Well drained acidic to neutral soils from sand through to light clay, tolerating low fertility and shallow profiles
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer and then only in long dry periods, since this species is naturally frugal. Mulch with its own dropped needles once available, avoid phosphorus-rich fertilisers, and plant several together if the copper winter flush matters, as only male trees show it.
