Alphonse Anderson Azalea - Azalea indica ‘Alphonse Anderson’
Soft pink blooms rimmed in white, with a rosy blotch in the throat, cover ‘Alphonse Anderson’ from late winter into spring. This tall single Azalea indica builds a rounded, well furnished evergreen shrub with the density to take clipping. It is planted as a flowering hedge as often as a specimen.
Why Alphonse Anderson Azalea
Blush pink, white rimmed flowers: Each bloom is soft pink with a white margin and a deeper rosy throat, which reads as a gentle blush from a distance.
Two flowering seasons: The main flush from late winter to spring is often followed by scattered flowers in autumn.
Clips cleanly: It answers an annual trim after flowering with dense, leafy growth, so it holds a hedge line.
Wider light range: It accepts more sun than most azaleas, so it suits open front gardens as well as shaded beds.
Toxicity warning: Eating the leaves or flowers brings on vomiting, drooling and an irregular heartbeat, in people as well as in dogs and cats, so it is planted away from children's play areas and pet runs.
Ideal Applications
Flowering hedge: A run along a path or front boundary gives a low clipped hedge that flowers across its whole face.
Front garden massing: Groups of three or five give a dependable pink spring display beneath a light canopy.
Pink and white borders: Alternated with a white indica azalea of the same tall habit, it makes a two colour border of matching scale.
Tubs where the soil is limey: In a broad ceramic tub of azalea mix on an east facing verandah it grows as well as in acid ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.7 to 0.9m, so the run closes into a single face
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn, or late winter to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Open, acid soil kept loose with composted pine bark, about pH 5 to 6; in alkaline or limey ground the leaves yellow between the veins
Establishment Care: Water deeply every few days through hot weather for the first two years, because the shallow roots dry quickly and a hedge left dry in late summer drops next season's buds. Clip once, straight after the main flowering, tapering the sides slightly so the base stays in light. On hot, sunny boundaries watch the leaves for the pale mottling of lace bug and treat it early.
