Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rough-Barked Apple - Angophora floribunda
Angophora floribunda is the gnarled, heavy-limbed paddock tree of the eastern Australian coast and ranges, and its value is character rather than neatness. The trunk and branches are covered in fibrous grey-brown bark and twist into sculptural shapes with age, carrying a broad spreading crown of dull green opposite leaves. In summer the whole canopy can turn creamy white with masses of fluffy flowers, hence the species name. This is a genuinely large tree for genuinely large spaces.
Why Rough-Barked Apple
Trunk Form: Mature trees develop crooked, muscular limbs and a broad buttressed base that no fast ornamental can imitate.
Mass Flowering: Heavy summer flowering carries scent and brings in lorikeets, honeyeaters and native bees.
Soil Tolerance: It grows naturally on alluvial flats and poor sandy ridges alike, and handles seasonally damp ground.
Habitat Value: Older specimens form hollows and rough bark crevices that support possums, microbats and nesting birds.
Shade Quality: The wide crown throws deep, cool shade over stock, paddock or lawn.
Ideal Applications
Acreage and rural feature tree: Set well away from buildings it becomes the defining tree of a property.
Paddock shade: A traditional stock shade tree through the tablelands and coastal valleys of New South Wales and Queensland.
Revegetation and habitat planting: Ideal for restoring a locally indigenous canopy layer along the east coast.
Park and civic open space: Suited to large public reserves where its scale and limb spread are an asset.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 8 to 10m for a windbreak or shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12 to 15m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, ahead of reliable rainfall
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable from sand to clay loam, handles seasonal wet and low fertility, no lime and no permanently saturated ground
Establishment Care: Water deeply every week or two through the first two summers, then taper off so the tree becomes self-sufficient. Keep mulch and grass clear of the collar, and plan the position for a 15 to 20m spread with limb drop in mind rather than for how the tree looks on delivery day.
