Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Anthurium schlechtendalii
This is the big leathery birds nest anthurium, not the small florist type grown for glossy red spathes. Anthurium schlechtendalii forms an upright rosette of thick paddle-shaped leaves that can reach a metre long, held in a vase shape that catches falling leaf litter and feeds itself. Its flowers are green and modest, so the whole value of the plant sits in the bold leaf mass it brings to a shaded courtyard where little else has presence.
Why Anthurium schlechtendalii
Leaf Scale: Individual leaves are large, thick and leathery, giving the kind of bold texture usually only available from bananas or philodendrons.
Rosette Form: Growth radiates from a central crown into a symmetrical vase, so a single plant looks deliberate rather than shapeless.
Deep Shade Performance: It holds good colour and form in light levels where most feature plants thin out.
Epiphytic Habit: It will grow in the ground, in a container, or wedged into the fork of a tree, which opens up unusual planting positions.
Berry Display: The spadix ripens to a column of red berries that persists for weeks after flowering.
Ideal Applications
Shaded Courtyard: Anchors a dark corner where lawn and flowering plants fail.
Tropical Understorey: Mass planted beneath palms and heliconias for a layered rainforest floor.
Large Feature Pot: Suits a wide glazed container under a covered patio or in a light well.
Atrium and Protected Interiors: Tolerates bright indirect light indoors provided humidity stays reasonable.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m for a continuous mass planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, and any frost-free period in the tropics
Soil & Drainage: Loose, coarse, organic-rich mix that drains freely. Heavy wet clay causes crown rot, so raise the bed or add composted bark and coarse grit
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist but never sodden through the first year, and mist or hose the foliage in dry weather since it responds strongly to humidity. Mulch with leaf litter or fine bark and shelter it completely from frost, which will destroy the crown.
