Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Crimson Crisp Apple - Malus domestica ‘Crimson Crisp’
An apple bred specifically for disease resistance, which matters more in Australian home gardens than most people realise, because black spot ruins unsprayed fruit in any district with wet spring weather. ‘Crimson Crisp’ carries deep crimson skin over firm cream flesh with a crisp, tart-sweet bite, and it holds condition in storage better than most early varieties. Malus domestica ‘Crimson Crisp’ ripens mid to late season, so in southern Australia expect picking from around late February into March.
Why Crimson Crisp
Scab Resistance: Bred to resist apple scab, which greatly reduces the spray program needed in a home orchard.
Fruit Quality: Firm, crisp, juicy flesh with a genuine tartness behind the sweetness rather than flat sugar.
Colour: Deep, even crimson skin that colours well without needing extreme cold nights.
Keeps Well: Fruit stores in the fridge for several months without going mealy.
Spring Blossom: White to pale pink flowers in spring make it ornamental before it is productive.
Ideal Applications
Home Orchard: Planted with a second, compatible apple variety for cross-pollination and a reliable crop.
Espalier: Apples are the classic espalier subject and train readily onto a wire fence or wall frame.
Edible Front Garden: Spring blossom and autumn fruit make it presentable enough for a visible position.
Cool-Climate Blocks: Suits Tasmania, Victoria, the tablelands, the Adelaide Hills and southern Western Australia, where winter chill is adequate.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m centres in an orchard row, or 1.5m if espaliered along a wire.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m as a free-standing specimen tree.
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant, which is standard for pome fruit.
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free-draining loam at a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Apples will not tolerate wet feet, so mound the planting position on heavy clay.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and keep water up while fruit is sizing, since dry spells at that stage cause small fruit and drop. Mulch a wide ring but keep it away from the graft union and trunk, and prune in winter to build an open vase or a trained framework.
