Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Pink Lady Apple (Espalier) - Malus domestica ‘Cripps Pink’
Trained flat and mounted on wires, an apple stops being a tree and becomes a piece of garden architecture that happens to bear fruit. This espalier is Malus domestica ‘Cripps Pink’, the Western Australian bred variety marketed as Pink Lady, prized for dense crisp flesh and a distinctive sweet sharp balance. Its long ripening season carries the harvest right through to the end of autumn.
Why Cripps Pink
Storage: Firm flesh and thick skin mean the fruit keeps for months without going floury.
Autumn Harvest: Picked from late April into May, well after every other apple in the garden has finished.
Moderate Chill: Suits warm temperate and inland districts where high chill apples fail to set properly.
Cropping Partner: Plant it with Golden Delicious, Gala or Granny Smith flowering at the same time for a full crop.
Flat Training: Strong upright shoots are easily bent to horizontal, and horizontal wood is what carries fruit buds.
Ideal Applications
Feature wall planting: Bare masonry becomes a living, cropping surface with tiers of blossom in spring.
Garden compartment divider: Trained on freestanding posts and wires it separates spaces at chest height.
Edible screen along a driveway: Narrow footprint keeps the drive clear while still screening it.
Small block orchard: Several trained trees produce more fruit per square metre than one open tree.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5-3m for a continuous trained row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3-4m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or autumn to early spring from a container
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining loam improved with compost, avoiding heavy clay and any site that puddles
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, and keep watering into autumn while the late crop is still filling. Mulch to 75mm, keep a grass free strip along the base, and tie new extensions to the wires while the wood is still supple.
