Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Early Moorpark Apricot - Prunus armeniaca ‘Early Moorpark’
‘Early Moorpark’ is a selection of the classic Moorpark apricot that ripens ahead of the standard strain, bringing the harvest forward into early summer in most southern districts. Prunus armeniaca makes a low, wide-branching deciduous tree with rounded leaves and a display of white to blush blossom that opens very early, often before the last frosts have finished. The fruit is the reason to plant it: deep orange, richly flavoured, and far better fresh off the tree than anything a supermarket can supply.
Why Early Moorpark
Harvest Timing: Fruit matures earlier than standard Moorpark, typically through December in cool temperate Australia.
Self Fertility: Apricots are self-fertile, so a single tree will crop without a second variety nearby.
Fruit Quality: Large, sweet, deep orange fruit with the classic Moorpark flavour, good fresh, dried or bottled.
Early Blossom: A cloud of white to pale pink flowers on bare wood makes the tree ornamental in its own right in late winter.
Compact Frame: It stays a small tree and responds well to open-vase pruning, so it fits a backyard orchard easily.
Ideal Applications
Backyard orchard: A single tree supplies a household and fits comfortably in a suburban rear garden.
Espalier against a warm wall: Trained flat on a north or east facing wall it ripens fruit earlier and takes almost no depth.
Edible feature tree: Blossom, summer shade and fruit from one plant in a productive garden design.
Cool climate small holding: Suited to the tablelands, the Adelaide Hills, Victoria, Tasmania and the Perth hills where winter chill is sufficient.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m for a close orchard row or hedgerow planting
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while the tree is fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam is essential, apricots are highly intolerant of wet feet and root rot, slightly acid to neutral pH suits best
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and mulch, keeping the mulch well clear of the graft union and trunk. Prune only in late summer or early autumn in dry weather, never in winter wet, to limit bacterial canker and gummosis.
