Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Moorpark Apricot - Prunus armeniaca ‘Moorpark’
‘Moorpark’ has been the benchmark home garden apricot in Australia for generations, and the reason is flavour: large fruit with deep orange flesh, a red blush on the sunny side, and a richness that commercial varieties bred for transport rarely match. Prunus armeniaca ‘Moorpark’ is also self fertile, so one tree crops on its own. It wants a cold winter and a dry summer, which makes it a southern Australian tree rather than a subtropical one.
Why Moorpark Apricot
Self fertile: A single tree sets a full crop with no pollinating partner required.
Flavour first: Fruit is large, richly flavoured and best eaten within a day or two of picking.
Summer harvest: Fruit ripens through December and January across most of southern Australia.
Winter chill dependent: It needs a genuinely cold winter, roughly 500 to 600 chill hours, to crop reliably.
Prune in dry weather: Cuts made in warm dry conditions after harvest heal cleanly, whereas winter pruning invites bacterial canker and gummosis.
Ideal Applications
Home orchard: The core use, a productive tree at a manageable scale in a backyard fruit planting.
Espalier: Trained flat against a sunny wall it fruits heavily in a very narrow bed.
Small garden fruit tree: Held at 3m with summer pruning, it fits properties where a full sized tree will not.
Seasonal shade: Planted near a paved sitting area it shades in summer and opens up in winter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in a row, or 2.5 to 3m for espalier
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant is ideal; containerised stock any time outside midsummer
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining loam at pH 6 to 7.5; apricots decline quickly in heavy or waterlogged soil
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and keep grass off a metre wide circle at the base. Mulch to 75mm clear of the trunk, thin heavy fruit set in early summer so the branches are not overloaded, and hold all pruning back to the warm dry weeks after harvest.
