Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Parana Pine - Araucaria angustifolia
Few trees have a silhouette as recognisable as the parana pine: whorls of branches that shed from below as the tree ages, leaving a tall clean trunk topped by a flat, candelabra like crown. Araucaria angustifolia is a South American relative of our own hoop and bunya pines, with stiff, sharply pointed leaves clothing the branches, and it is now endangered across its natural range in southern Brazil. This is a tree for acreage, parkland and large properties, planted where its final scale is understood from the start.
Why Parana Pine
Architectural Crown: The umbrella shaped head on a bare trunk is one of the most distinctive outlines in conifer horticulture.
Longevity: Araucarias are long lived trees, so a well placed specimen becomes a landmark rather than a passing feature.
Conservation Value: The species is threatened in its native forests, which makes cultivated plantings genuinely worthwhile.
Frost Hardy: Unlike most subtropical conifers it handles cold winters, suiting elevated and southern districts.
Site Requirement: Mature cones are large and heavy, so keep it well away from parking, seating and play areas.
Ideal Applications
Parkland and Acreage Specimen: Open ground where the trunk and crown can be seen in full.
Grand Avenue: Widely spaced along a long rural driveway for an unmistakable arrival.
Botanic and Collection Plantings: A significant species for arboretums, schools and public gardens.
Windbreak Backbone: On large rural properties it forms the tall upper layer of a mixed shelter planting.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening tree; grove plantings at 6m to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10m to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Deep, well drained, acidic to neutral soil with reliable rainfall or irrigation; it dislikes shallow, hot and dry inland sites
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first three summers, as young araucarias establish slowly and resent drying out. Mulch a wide ring, keep mowers and whipper snippers away from the trunk, and allow generous clearance from buildings, services and paving before planting rather than after.
