Alexandra Palm - Archontophoenix alexandrae var. beatriceae
This is the heavyweight form of the Alexandra Palm, a north Queensland variety distinguished by a markedly swollen, bottle shaped trunk base and a heavier crown than the common type. Archontophoenix alexandrae var. beatriceae carries long arching fronds with silvery undersides above a smooth green crownshaft, and it grows fast enough on a moist site to make real height inside a decade. It is chosen for large tropical and subtropical gardens where a tall, clean stemmed palm is wanted as the vertical element above everything else.
Why this Alexandra Palm
Swollen trunk base: The thickened lower trunk gives the palm a sculptural, planted stability that the standard form lacks.
Silver frond reverse: The undersides of the fronds flash pale silver grey in wind, which reads well when the crown sits above the roofline.
Self cleaning crownshaft: Spent fronds shed cleanly on their own, so there is no ongoing frond trimming at height.
Rapid growth: On warm, moist, well fed ground it puts on height quickly compared with most feature palms.
Flower and fruit display: Cream flower sprays emerge below the crownshaft and are followed by heavy bunches of red fruit.
Ideal Applications
Tall canopy palm: Planted in odd numbered groups of staggered heights to give a natural rainforest profile.
Resort and poolside planting: The clean trunk allows underplanting right to the base with no loss of light.
Driveway avenue: A double row of matched trunks creates a strong tropical arrival sequence.
Screening above fence height: Useful where privacy is needed from a neighbouring second storey rather than at ground level.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m apart for a dense grouped stand
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m apart
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer in the wet warm months
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, moisture retentive soil that still drains, and it will not thrive on dry sand without irrigation
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone consistently moist for the first two summers, since these palms come from creek lines and rainforest margins and check badly if allowed to dry out. Mulch widely, feed with a controlled release palm fertiliser twice a year, and give young palms shelter from strong wind and full frost free conditions.
