Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Australian Sugar Palm - Arenga australasica
Arenga australasica is one of the few genuinely large feather palms native to Australia, occurring in coastal rainforest of far north Queensland and the Torres Strait. It clumps, throwing several ringed trunks from one base, and the fronds carry a distinct silvery cast on the underside that flickers whenever there is wind. Landscapers choose it over an imported palm when a client wants tropical scale with local provenance.
Why Australian Sugar Palm
Multi-trunked habit: Several stems of differing height rise from one clump, giving a layered silhouette rather than a single pole.
Silver reverse: The pale underside of each frond lifts the canopy visually and catches low afternoon light.
Native provenance: An Australian rainforest species, so it fits local-plant briefs that exclude exotic palms.
Shade quality: The broad crown casts genuine usable shade over a courtyard or pool surround.
Wind resilience: Coastal rainforest origin means it copes with the salt-edged wind of tropical and subtropical coasts.
Ideal Applications
Tropical courtyards: The clumping habit fills a corner in a way a solitary palm cannot.
Rainforest-style gardens: Works as the upper canopy layer above gingers, ferns and cordylines.
Resort and pool surrounds: Provides height and shade with a clean trunk line at ground level.
Native rainforest revegetation: Suits habitat plantings in its natural climatic range along the Queensland coast.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a continuous canopy
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m to allow the full clump to develop
Best Planting Season: Wet season through to early autumn in the tropics; late spring to summer further south
Soil & Drainage: Deep, humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil that still drains. It resents drying out completely and dislikes compacted or shallow ground.
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first hot season and keep a thick layer of coarse organic mulch out to the drip line. Feed with a palm-specific fertiliser in spring and again in mid summer. Note that the fruit contains irritant crystals, so site it away from paths where children play if fruiting is a concern.
