Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Tassel Cord Rush - Baloskion tetraphyllum
Baloskion tetraphyllum is the soft one. Where most Australian rushes and sedges are stiff and spiky, this species carries fine, feathery green plumes on upright stems, so a mass planting moves in the lightest breeze and reads as texture rather than structure. It comes from swamp margins and creek banks down the east coast, which means it does something almost no other ornamental does well: it thrives in ground that stays wet.
Why Tassel Cord Rush
Wet Feet Tolerance: It grows happily in saturated soil, at pond margins and in standing water, where most plants rot.
Feathery Texture: The fine plumose foliage is unusually soft for a native strappy plant and contrasts well with grasses.
Clumping Habit: It spreads by slow rhizome into a tidy colony rather than running invasively.
Frost and Heat: Hardy through frost and through hot summers as long as moisture is available.
Habitat Value: Dense stems shelter frogs, small birds and beneficial insects in a water garden.
Ideal Applications
Rain Gardens and Swales: Purpose-built for bioretention basins and stormwater treatment beds.
Pond and Pool Margins: Softens hard water edges and grows directly into shallow water.
Mass Planting: Drifts of thirty or more create a rippling green field effect in an open bed.
Water Bowls and Sealed Pots: One of the few plants that will grow permanently in a container without drainage.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8-1m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Moisture-retentive to permanently wet soil, ideally slightly acidic and rich in organic matter. It will grow in ordinary garden beds provided they never dry out completely.
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone constantly moist from planting, and do not let a new clump dry out even once during its first summer. Mulch with coarse organic material, feed lightly with a low-phosphorus native fertiliser in spring, and renew old clumps by cutting spent culms out at the base rather than shearing the tops, which ruins the plumed effect.
