Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
China Gold Bamboo - Bambusa eutuldoides var. viridivittata
Golden yellow culms randomly striped with green make Bambusa eutuldoides var. viridivittata the most decorative of the reliable clumping bamboos, and its clumping habit is the key point: it stays where it is planted instead of running. That single characteristic is why it is used across suburban boundaries where black bamboo would have to be barriered and policed.
Why China Gold Bamboo
Clumping habit: Rhizomes are short and tight, so the clump expands slowly outward and never sends runners across a lawn.
Culm colour: Bright golden canes with irregular green stripes hold their colour and are the reason the plant is grown.
Height with a narrow base: It screens at six metres or more from a clump little more than two metres wide.
Rapid establishment: New culms emerge each warm season, each one taller than the last, so a screen resolves quickly.
Year round density: Evergreen leaf cover from mid height upward, with the coloured canes visible below.
Ideal Applications
Tall boundary screen: Planted in a line to block two-storey overlooking where a fence cannot go high enough.
Poolside tropical planting: Adds height and movement with a compact base footprint near coping.
Feature clump: A single clump in a courtyard with the lower culms cleaned up to display the gold canes.
Narrow side passages: Its vertical habit suits corridors between buildings where bed depth is minimal.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, when soil is warm and new culms are actively forming
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil that still drains freely. Improve sandy soils with compost, as bamboo is a heavy feeder and dislikes drying out.
Establishment Care: Water deeply two or three times a week through the first summer, as under-watering in year one produces thin culms that never thicken. Mulch heavily with organic matter, feed with a nitrogen-rich or lawn-type fertiliser in spring and again in mid summer, and thin out old culms at ground level each year to keep the clump looking clean.
