Oldham’s Bamboo - Bambusa oldhamii
Oldham's Bamboo is the clumping bamboo most often specified in Australia when a fast, tall, non-invasive screen is required. Bambusa oldhamii forms a tight upright clump of thick green culms carrying its foliage high, so it screens at first floor level without running through the garden the way phyllostachys and other running bamboos do. Its rhizomes are the clumping type, meaning the base widens slowly on itself and can be held in bounds by removing outer culms every few years.
Why Oldham’s Bamboo
Clumping Root System: Rhizomes turn upward rather than travelling, so it will not invade lawn, neighbouring blocks or garden beds.
Height for Footprint: Few plants deliver 10m of screening from a base only 2 to 3m across.
Speed: New culms emerge at full diameter and reach near full height in a single growing season.
Wind and Noise Buffering: The dense mass of culms and foliage takes the edge off traffic noise and wind exposure.
Cold Tolerance: More frost tolerant than most tropical clumpers, handling light frosts once the clump is established.
Ideal Applications
Upper Level Screening: The go-to answer for blocking a two storey window or a neighbouring balcony.
Windbreak: Planted in a row it filters rather than blocks wind, so it does not create damaging turbulence.
Poolside and Resort Planting: Gives instant tropical character with minimal leaf drop into water compared to broadleaf trees.
Large Planters: Workable in generous raised beds and planter boxes provided watering and feeding are consistent.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer so the clump makes a full season of growth before winter
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture-retentive soil with free drainage. It is a heavy feeder and will underperform badly on thin, dry, unimproved sand
Establishment Care: Water generously and consistently through the first two summers, because moisture stress in the growth season directly reduces culm height. Mulch thickly with composted bark and feed with a high nitrogen or lawn-type fertiliser in spring and again in mid summer.
Plant Details
