Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Birdsong Banksia - Banksia ‘Birdsong’
Named garden hybrids such as Banksia ‘Birdsong’ exist to give the nectar-heavy flower spikes of the genus on a frame that suits a suburban block rather than a coastal heath. It builds an upright large shrub to small tree with leathery foliage, a visible trunk structure and cool season flowering that brings honeyeaters and lorikeets in at a time of year when very little else is producing nectar. Where a grevillea sprawls, this holds a stronger vertical line and reads as a proper small tree.
Why Birdsong Banksia
Bird value: The upright cylindrical spikes carry heavy nectar loads and are worked hard by honeyeaters, wattlebirds and lorikeets.
Cool season display: Flowering runs through the autumn and winter gap when most ornamental shrubs have shut down.
Coastal tolerance: Handles salt-laden wind and sandy profiles that defeat most exotic shrubs.
Manageable frame: Stays within a few metres rather than the eight to ten of the larger banksia species, so it fits real garden beds.
Low input: Once established it wants no phosphorus, no rich feeding and very little water.
Ideal Applications
Habitat planting: Used as the nectar backbone of a bird garden, paired with grevilleas and correas for year round flowering.
Coastal gardens: Planted in the second line back from the front dune where exposure and sand are the limiting factors.
Informal native screen: Set in a staggered row it gives a soft, permeable screen without the density of a clipped hedge.
Low water beds: Anchors unirrigated gravel or sand beds where drainage is sharp and rainfall is the only water supply.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring in temperate zones, autumn in warm humid areas, avoiding midsummer heat
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy, gravelly or loamy soils with a neutral to acid pH, low phosphorus. Mound or raise the bed on clay, as wet feet is the usual cause of failure
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week through the first summer, then taper to occasional deep soaks only. Mulch with coarse bark or gravel to 75mm, held clear of the collar, and avoid cultivating around the root zone once planted.
