Southern Peninsula Silver Banksia - Banksia marginata ‘Southern Peninsula’
Silver Banksia takes its name from the underside of the leaf, which is a clean silver white and flashes when the wind turns the foliage. Banksia marginata is extraordinarily variable across its range, from prostrate coastal forms to twelve metre trees, and this Southern Peninsula selection represents the local Mornington Peninsula population, which grows as a small gnarled tree with a broad crown. It is planted for autumn and winter nectar, when it becomes one of the few reliable food sources for honeyeaters and pygmy possums on the Peninsula.
Why Silver Banksia
Cool Season Nectar: Pale yellow cylindrical spikes open from late summer through autumn into winter, feeding wildlife when little else flowers.
Silver Backed Foliage: Narrow dark green leaves with white undersides give a two tone shimmer that no other local tree provides.
Coastal Character: Peninsula provenance plants develop the wind sculpted, low branching frame that reads as authentically local.
Low Water Demand: Once established it draws on deep sandy profiles and needs no supplementary irrigation in southern Victoria.
Phosphorus Sensitivity Managed: Like all banksias it thrives on lean soils, which means no fertiliser programme and no feeding costs.
Ideal Applications
Indigenous Habitat Planting: A cornerstone species for Peninsula revegetation and for wildlife corridors linking remnant bushland.
Coastal Feature Tree: Its twisted trunk and open crown make an excellent single specimen in a gravel or sand based coastal garden.
Informal Grouping: Planted in odd numbered clusters it builds the layered, uneven canopy of natural heathy woodland.
Low Maintenance Verge: Suits nature strips and rural entries where irrigation is unavailable and soils are poor.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Autumn, so roots establish through the winter rainfall period before the first dry summer.
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is essential. Sands, sandy loams and gravels suit it best. Never add manure, compost rich in phosphorus, or standard garden fertiliser, and never plant into a wet hollow.
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer only, keeping water off the trunk collar to avoid root rot. Mulch with a coarse gravel or chunky bark and resist the temptation to improve the soil, since banksias fail far more often from kindness than from neglect.
