Green Giant Swamp Banksia - Banksia robur ‘Green Giant’
Most banksias sulk and die in wet ground, which is exactly why Banksia robur earns its place in Australian planting plans. It comes from coastal swamp heath and copes with soils that stay damp for weeks, carrying huge leathery saw toothed leaves and thick metallic green flower spikes that age through gold to bronze. ‘Green Giant’ is a selected form grown for stronger vigour and bigger foliage than typical seedling stock.
Why Green Giant Swamp Banksia
Handles Wet Feet: It grows naturally in seasonally waterlogged sand and peat, so it suits low spots and rain garden edges where other banksias rot.
Bold Foliage: Leaves reach 30cm with coarse toothed margins and rusty felted new growth, giving structure even between flowering periods.
Long Flowering: Blue green buds open to yellow green cylindrical spikes mainly from autumn into winter, holding on the bush for weeks and drying to bronze.
Bird Value: Honeyeaters and lorikeets work the spikes heavily, which makes it a genuine habitat plant rather than a decorative one.
Recovers From Hard Pruning: A woody lignotuber at the base lets it be cut back low and reshoot, so it can be rejuvenated rather than removed.
Ideal Applications
Native Screen: Grouped along a boundary it gives a dense informal barrier to head height with strong seasonal interest.
Wet or Poorly Drained Areas: Suits swale edges, damp lawn corners and the fringe of a detention basin where the soil stays moist.
Coastal Gardens: Tolerates sandy soil and salt laden wind behind the frontal dune line.
Habitat and Cut Flower Plantings: A reliable nectar source through the cooler months, and the spikes last well when cut.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2m to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn in warm districts, spring where frosts are sharp
Soil & Drainage: Sandy, peaty or loamy soils, acidic to neutral, tolerating seasonal wetness; avoid lime and avoid standard phosphorus rich fertilisers
Establishment Care: Keep water up for the first two summers even though the mature plant is tough, and mulch with a coarse organic layer kept clear of the stems. Feed only with a low phosphorus native formulation, as ordinary fertiliser can damage the root system.
