Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Cape Schanck Old Man Banksia - Banksia serrata ‘Cape Schanck’
Old Man Banksia is one of the great character trees of the east coast, and this is a low, spreading selection of it collected from the Mornington Peninsula coast. It carries all the species traits that people plant Banksia serrata for, the saw-edged leathery leaves, the fissured grey bark and the thick greenish cylindrical flower spikes, at a fraction of the height of a coastal specimen tree. It is chosen where the look of a weathered banksia is wanted but there is no room for a canopy.
Why Cape Schanck Old Man Banksia
Reduced scale: A markedly lower, wider growing form than the species, which can reach 8 to 12m on a coastal headland.
Serrated foliage: The stiff, saw-toothed leaves are dark above and pale beneath, giving strong texture year round.
Flower spikes: Dense greenish-yellow cylindrical brushes hold for weeks and are followed by the woody seed cones the species is known for.
Bird habitat: Honeyeaters and wattlebirds work the flowers heavily through autumn and winter.
Coastal toughness: Sandy soil, salt wind and long dry spells are its natural conditions.
Ideal Applications
Coastal native gardens: Sits naturally with correa, westringia and coast tea tree on sandy sites.
Bird-attracting planting: A reliable nectar source during the leaner autumn and winter months.
Low-maintenance embankments: The spreading habit covers ground on dry, poor banks with no irrigation.
Feature planting in gravel: The gnarled branch structure shows well against crushed rock or exposed aggregate.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m for a continuous low mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring, avoiding the peak of summer
Soil & Drainage: Sandy or gravelly, sharply drained and low in nutrients. Like most banksias it is sensitive to phosphorus, so use native-safe fertiliser only, and never plant into wet clay.
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer, then only in extended drought. Mulch with a coarse, low-nutrient material such as pine bark or gravel and keep it clear of the stem.
