Bay Tree - Laurus ‘Miles Choice’
Valued for hedging, this upright form of the Mediterranean sweet bay branches closely from the base and clips into a dense, even face. Laurus nobilis has been clipped into hedges and topiary for centuries, and ‘Miles Choice’ gives that formal look with one or two trims a year. Its glossy, dark green leaves are the true culinary bay, aromatic when crushed.
Why Bay Tree
Hedging Form: Dense, upright branching from low down gives a solid hedge face without bare stems at the base.
Clips Cleanly: It takes shears and hedge trimmers well, and its measured growth keeps a clipped outline sharp for months between trims.
Culinary Leaves: Every trim yields bay leaves for the kitchen, used fresh or dried.
Coastal Tolerance: It handles coastal gardens and moderate wind well, though on frontline sites exposed to raw salt wind it needs a buffer planting in front.
Dry Spell Resilience: Once established it rides out long dry periods while keeping its dark, glossy foliage.
Ideal Applications
Formal Clipped Hedge: Kept between 1.5 and 4m, it closes a boundary in dark, aromatic green.
Garden Room Divider: A clipped line at head height splits a large garden into separate rooms without the bulk of a wall.
Herb Garden Backdrop: A dark clipped wall behind raised vegetable and herb beds shelters them from wind and completes a working kitchen garden.
Coastal Privacy Screen: A dependable formal screen in coastal suburbs set back from the frontline.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m for a dense formal hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring
Soil & Drainage: Well drained loam or sandy soil, neutral to slightly alkaline; it rots in waterlogged clay, so improve drainage before planting in heavy ground
Establishment Care: Soak the hedge line at planting and every few days for six weeks, then weekly through its first warm season, after which rainfall carries it in most years. Trim lightly from the first season to build density, and check new growth for scale insects in humid weather. The leaves are a kitchen herb for people but upset dogs, cats and horses that eat them, so keep clippings out of their reach.
