Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Beccariophoenix spp.
The Madagascan Beccariophoenix palms are grown for one reason above all others: they give the arching, coconut like feather crown that most Australian gardens are too cool or too far south to achieve with an actual coconut. They carry long pinnate fronds on a stout, clean, ringed grey trunk, and the crown holds a heavy tropical presence without the litter and hazard of falling nuts. Cold tolerance varies between the species in the genus, so they are best placed in warm coastal and subtropical gardens or in sheltered frost free positions further south.
Why Beccariophoenix
Crown Shape: Long arching pinnate fronds that curve outward and down, giving the classic coconut palm outline.
Trunk Quality: A thick, straight, clean ringed trunk that improves as the palm gains height and self cleans of old frond bases.
Broader Climate Range: More tolerant of cool nights than a true coconut, which extends the look into subtropical and warm temperate gardens.
Wind Behaviour: The fronds flex and move rather than shred, so the crown stays presentable in exposed coastal positions.
No Fruit Hazard: Nothing heavy falls, so it can be used over paving, seating and pool surrounds.
Ideal Applications
Pool Surround: The resort look with none of the falling coconut risk, and enough crown height to clear a pool fence.
Tropical Courtyard: A single palm through a paved courtyard cut out gives vertical scale in a small footprint.
Feature Grouping: Three palms of staggered height planted together read as a natural stand rather than a row.
Warm Coastal Garden: Handles salt laden wind on a protected coastal block.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. In a grouped stand, 3 to 4m apart.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m to allow the mature crown to spread.
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer, into warm soil.
Soil & Drainage: Deep, organically rich, free draining soil that stays evenly moist. Palms in this genus dislike both drought stress and stagnant water.
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first summer, keeping the root ball itself moist rather than only wetting the surrounding soil. Mulch generously out to a metre from the trunk, feed with a palm specific fertiliser two or three times through the warm season, and never remove green fronds.
