Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Mexican Lily - Beschorneria yuccoides
Everything an agave offers architecturally, without the spines. Beschorneria yuccoides forms a soft, arching rosette of grey green strap leaves, and in spring throws a coral red arching stem well above the foliage hung with tubular green flowers tipped in red. It suits the same dry, sculptural planting as agaves and yuccas but can be planted beside a path or seating area where a spine tipped succulent would be a liability.
Why Mexican Lily
Spineless foliage: The leaves are pliable and blunt tipped, safe near paths, pools and play areas.
Coral flower stem: The 1.5 to 2m arching inflorescence is the feature, coloured as much by the stem and bracts as the flowers.
Clumping habit: It spreads slowly by offsets, so the clump persists and thickens over the years.
Tolerates real moisture: Unlike most agaves it accepts occasional summer watering and a slightly richer soil.
Frost hardy: Established plants shrug off frost to around minus 5C, which extends it well inland.
Ideal Applications
Dry courtyard planting: Repeated in a gravel courtyard it gives structure that holds all year.
Coastal garden: It handles salt wind and sandy soil in exposed coastal positions.
Embankment or rockery: The arching form reads well spilling over rock or from the top of a batter.
Large container: In a wide pot it makes a low maintenance entry feature that flowers reliably.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a massed low band
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn while the soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, sand or gritty soil; winter wet at the crown is the main risk
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first warm season to settle the roots, then only in extended dry spells. Use a gravel or coarse mulch rather than fine bark so the base of the rosette stays dry, and cut the spent flower stem back to the base once it has finished.
