Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Chinese Red Birch - Betula albosinensis var. septentrionalis
Bark is the reason to plant this birch. Betula albosinensis var. septentrionalis peels in fine translucent sheets to reveal trunk colour ranging from coppery orange through pink to mahogany, often with a pale grey bloom over the top, and it looks best when low winter sun catches it. The canopy itself is light and airy, turning clear butter yellow in autumn, so the tree gives you three distinct seasons of interest on a modest footprint.
Why Chinese Red Birch
Bark: Coppery pink to rich orange brown, exfoliating in papery curls that catch the light from a distance.
Light Canopy: Small serrated leaves cast dappled rather than heavy shade, so shade tolerant planting continues underneath.
Autumn Colour: Reliable clear yellow foliage through April and May in cool districts.
Slim Footprint: An upright, relatively narrow crown that fits courtyards and side gardens where broader trees would not.
Grove Planting: Responds well to being planted in tight groups of three or five, which multiplies the bark effect.
Ideal Applications
Multi Trunk Grove: Close planted clumps in a gravel or ground cover bed, a standard treatment in contemporary cool climate design.
Courtyard Tree: The narrow crown and non aggressive roots suit small enclosed spaces.
Uplit Feature: Ground mounted lighting on the trunk turns the bark into a night time feature.
Woodland Border: Planted at the back of a perennial border to give height without blocking light.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m for a close planted grove
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Moisture retentive, well drained loam with a cool root run, ideally neutral to slightly acidic, and not a hot dry reflected heat position
Establishment Care: Birches have shallow fibrous roots and will not tolerate drying out, so water deeply twice weekly through the first two summers. Mulch heavily to keep the surface roots cool and prune only in late summer or autumn, since winter pruning causes heavy sap bleeding.
