Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Korean Birch - Betula costata
Where most ornamental birches are grown for chalk white trunks, Betula costata offers something warmer: creamy ochre to pale honey bark that lifts and peels in horizontal sheets, over a strongly ribbed leaf with deeply impressed veins that gives the foliage real texture. It is a robust, cold hardy tree from the forests of north east Asia and it is often confused in the nursery trade with the closely related Erman's birch. In an Australian setting it belongs in genuinely cool districts, where it makes a clean upright shade tree with good yellow autumn colour.
Why Korean Birch
Bark Character: Creamy white to pale ochre, sometimes flushed pink, shedding in broad papery sheets as the trunk thickens.
Leaf Texture: Deeply ribbed, corrugated leaves catch light differently to the flat foliage of common silver birch.
Cold Hardiness: Comes from a severe continental climate, so hard frost and snow are no obstacle.
Upright Form: A straight, well proportioned trunk with an even branching pattern that needs little corrective pruning.
Autumn Tone: Foliage turns soft golden yellow before falling, holding well in still weather.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Avenue: Rows along a driveway in the highlands, Tasmania or the Victorian ranges.
Mixed Birch Grove: Combined with white barked species so the honey coloured trunks read as a deliberate contrast.
Filtered Shade for Understorey: The open canopy suits hellebores, hydrangeas and woodland bulbs beneath.
Garden Framework Tree: Provides fast vertical structure in a new cool climate garden without overwhelming it.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m for a grove effect
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Winter, during full dormancy
Soil & Drainage: Deep, fertile, moisture retentive soil with free drainage, sheltered from hot drying winds
Establishment Care: Water deeply and regularly through the first two summers, since young birches decline quickly if the surface roots dry out. Apply a thick organic mulch each spring and delay any pruning until late summer to avoid sap bleeding.
