Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Royal Frost Birch - Betula populifolia ‘Royal Frost’
Two features rarely appear on the same birch: chalk white bark and deep purple foliage. ‘Royal Frost’ has both, holding burgundy purple leaves through summer that redden to orange and scarlet in autumn, above a trunk that whitens progressively as the tree matures. Betula populifolia ‘Royal Frost’ keeps the narrow upright habit of grey birch, so it fits a suburban block where a spreading white birch would be too wide.
Why Royal Frost Birch
Purple summer foliage: Colour holds through the growing season rather than fading to green by December.
White bark: The pale trunk develops with age and contrasts directly with the dark canopy above it.
Narrow crown: An upright pyramidal shape suits side boundaries and narrow front gardens.
Autumn transition: Purple shifts to orange and scarlet over several weeks before leaf fall.
Winter tracery: Fine bare twigs against white bark make it as good in July as in January.
Ideal Applications
Small garden feature: Delivers vertical presence and colour without a heavy canopy.
Uplit night feature: White bark takes garden lighting better than almost any other trunk.
Grove planting: Groups of three or five close together read as a stand rather than single trees.
Deck and pool surrounds: Light dappled shade with minimal leaf litter through most of the year.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m, or 1.5 to 2m for a deliberately tight grove
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Moist, well drained soil with a cool root run; it dislikes hot dry soil, heavy alkaline clay and reflected heat
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week every summer for the first three years, as birch roots are shallow and the tree declines quickly under drought stress. Mulch widely to at least 1.5m radius to keep the soil cool, keep mowers off the root plate, and reserve this tree for cool to warm temperate districts with reliable summer water.
