Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Compactus Kurrajong - Brachychiton ‘Compactus’
This is the Kurrajong for sites that cannot take the full-sized tree. A compact selection of Brachychiton populneus, it holds a dense, upright, conical crown on a single clean trunk rather than spreading into the broad shade canopy of the species. The glossy, poplar-like leaves, thickened trunk base and remarkable ability to sit through a dry summer without irrigation all carry across, which is why it is chosen for verges, narrow courtyards and hot western boundaries where a smaller evergreen native is needed.
Why the Compactus Kurrajong
Drought reserves: The swollen trunk base stores water, allowing established trees to hold their foliage through extended dry spells across most of mainland Australia.
Contained crown: Naturally tight and upright, so it needs far less formative pruning than a seedling Kurrajong to stay within a suburban footprint.
Deep rooting habit: Roots run down rather than aggressively along the surface, making it a safer choice near paving and lawn than most fast shade trees.
Bell flowers: Clusters of cream bells with maroon speckled throats appear through late spring and summer on mature trees.
Heat and wind hardiness: Copes with hot inland summers, coastal wind and light to moderate frost once established.
Ideal Applications
Narrow street and verge planting: The upright form suits nature strips and driveways where a wide canopy would be a liability.
Evergreen windbreak: Planted in a staggered row it filters hot dry wind off open paddocks or exposed rear boundaries.
Low maintenance courtyard tree: Holds a neat shape with minimal water and little leaf drop compared with deciduous alternatives.
Rural entry avenue: Evenly spaced pairs give a formal approach that survives on rainfall alone once settled in.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 7m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, avoiding the peak of summer heat in inland districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining loam, sand or gravelly soil; tolerates poor and alkaline ground but will sulk in heavy clay that stays wet
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice a week for the first two summers to draw roots down, then taper off as the tree becomes self-sufficient. Keep a 75mm coarse mulch ring clear of the trunk and stake only in very exposed sites, releasing ties within the first year.
