Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ned’s Red Flame Tree - Brachychiton ‘Ned’s Red’
Flame trees grown from seed can take fifteen years to flower and may never flower heavily. ‘Ned’s Red’ is a grafted Brachychiton hybrid selected to remove that gamble: it flowers young, holds a deep red, and stays smaller and denser than a full sized Illawarra flame tree. The flowers are waxy red bells in dense clusters on branches that shed their leaves first, so the tree turns solid red for several weeks in late spring and early summer.
Why Ned’s Red Flame Tree
Flowers young: Grafting from a proven flowering clone means colour within a few years instead of a decade or more.
Depth of colour: A darker, more saturated red than the average seedling flame tree.
Contained frame: Smaller and denser than the species, which puts a flame tree within reach of a suburban block.
Drought hardiness: A swollen trunk base stores water, so established trees ride out dry spells.
Nectar value: Lorikeets, honeyeaters and native bees work the flowers heavily while they last.
Ideal Applications
Front garden feature: The choice where a full sized flame tree would eventually dominate the block.
Street and verge planting: Suits warm temperate and subtropical council plantings with reasonable clearance.
Coastal and subtropical gardens: Handles humidity, sandy soil and moderate salt exposure.
Driveway repetition: Three or more give a dramatic flowering run in early summer.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly loam; heavy wet clay causes root rot and it will not tolerate standing water
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first two summers then taper off, since overwatering an established tree does more harm than underwatering. Keep mulch clear of the swollen trunk base, protect young trees from frost, and stake only until the graft union and trunk have set.
