Variegated Dwarf Black Olive - Bucida molinetii ‘Variegata’
Despite the common name this is not an olive at all. Bucida molinetii is a small Caribbean tree that grows in tiered horizontal layers, with tiny leaves gathered in rosettes at the tips of stiff zigzag branchlets, producing a naturally bonsai like silhouette. The variegated form adds cream and white marbling to those miniature leaves and a pink flush on new growth, so the whole plant reads as pale and finely textured. It is a warm climate specimen for frost free coastal and tropical Australian gardens.
Why the Variegated Dwarf Black Olive
Tiered branching: Horizontal layered limbs give an architectural, sculpted outline with no training required.
Miniature variegated leaf: Tiny cream and green leaves clustered in rosettes create a delicate, almost cloud like texture.
Pink new growth: Fresh flushes emerge with a rose tint that contrasts against the older cream marbled foliage.
Coastal toughness: It tolerates salt wind, alkaline sand and limestone soils that defeat most ornamental trees.
Slow and compact: Restrained growth means it works close to buildings and in courtyards without becoming a problem.
Ideal Applications
Sculptural courtyard tree: Its layered form suits a paved courtyard where the silhouette is the main event.
Coastal garden feature: Salt and sand tolerance make it a strong choice for beachfront planting in the tropics.
Large container specimen: Slow growth and drought tolerance suit a big pot on a warm terrace.
Poolside accent: Fine leaf litter and a compact habit make it far less trouble beside water than a broadleaf tree.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2.5 to 3m centres for an informal layered screen
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m so the tiered branching is displayed in full
Best Planting Season: Spring and summer into warm soil in frost free districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil of any type, including sandy and alkaline ground. It handles drought once established and will not tolerate frost
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first warm season, then taper to occasional deep soakings as the root system spreads. Mulch lightly, keep it clear of the trunk, and avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, which pushes soft growth and washes the variegation out of the new leaves.
