Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sagewood - Buddleja salvifolia
Sagewood flowers in late winter, which is its main advantage over the summer buddlejas. Buddleja salvifolia is a large evergreen shrub from southern Africa with wrinkled sage like grey green leaves, felted white underneath, and dense conical heads of tiny pale lilac flowers with an orange throat that carry a strong honey scent across a garden. Left alone it drifts into an untidy small tree, so it is a plant that rewards a hard cut back after flowering.
Why Sagewood
Late winter bloom: Flowering runs from late winter into early spring, well ahead of the summer flowering buddlejas.
Honey fragrance: The scent carries several metres and is one of the strongest of any winter flowering shrub.
Sage textured foliage: Grey green wrinkled leaves with white felted undersides give year round tonal contrast.
Butterfly and bird magnet: Nectar draws butterflies, honeyeaters and native bees at a lean time of year.
Fast and forgiving: Quick to fill a gap, tolerant of poor soil, and it reshoots readily from hard pruning.
Ideal Applications
Informal screen: A row makes a fast, soft edged boundary where a clipped hedge would be too formal.
Back of a mixed border: Grey foliage and height behind perennials, with winter flower as the payoff.
Pollinator gardens: One of the most productive winter nectar plants available for a butterfly planting.
Rural banks and shelter: Holds soil on dry slopes and takes wind exposure without staking.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Well drained soil of any moderate quality, including rocky and poor ground; it will not tolerate waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to build a deep root system, then reduce to occasional deep soaks, as established plants are genuinely drought tolerant. Mulch to 75mm and cut the whole shrub back by a third to a half straight after flowering, which keeps it dense and sets up the wood that carries next season's blooms.
