Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Callistemon Prolific - Callistemon viminalis
Callistemon Prolific is a weeping, red flowered selection of Callistemon viminalis, carrying its brushes in spring with a lighter flush in autumn. It makes a rounded shrub of 3 to 4m, tall enough to block a neighbour's window yet a fraction of the size of the creek bank trees the wild species forms. That stream side ancestry is why it takes heavy, seasonally wet ground in its stride. Botanists now often list the species as Melaleuca viminalis.
Why Callistemon Prolific
Clear red brushes: The flowers are a bright, true red that stands out against the fine green foliage from across the garden.
Softly weeping habit: Arching branchlets give the plant movement and soften fence lines, retaining walls and hard building edges.
Dry spell resilience: Once its roots are down it rides out long dry spells as readily as it takes a soaking, so one plant handles both the wet and the dry years of the east coast.
Bird and bee food: Each flowering keeps lorikeets and native bees working the shrub for weeks at a time.
Responds to pruning: A light trim as the last brushes fade keeps it dense, and an old, leggy plant can be cut well back to renew it.
Ideal Applications
Informal flowering screen: A row along a side boundary gives privacy above fence height, with colour twice a year instead of a plain green wall.
Swales and low corners: It suits drainage lines, detention areas and the soggy bottom of a sloping block.
Native bird gardens: Set among grevilleas, banksias and lomandra, it gives small birds dense cover at mid height between the taller natives.
Acreage shelter: Planted in loose groups it filters wind around sheds, dams and the house yard on an exposed property.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring or autumn, avoiding the hottest weeks of summer
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable from sandy loam to heavy clay; tolerates periodic waterlogging but not permanently stagnant water
Establishment Care: Give it a deep soak twice weekly through its first 10 to 12 weeks, then again whenever a dry spell sets in during its first summer. Mulch to 75mm, kept clear of the stems, and feed in spring with a low phosphorus native fertiliser. Check soft spring growth for sawfly larvae, which cluster on the tips and can strip a young plant quickly.
